Heads
To keep count of breakage in the greenware stage, Joanie removes the pieces' heads and stores them in a container, throwing the rest away. Sometimes, every now and then, these heads wind up as pendants or contest prizes or trophies for model horse shows. Click on the pictures below for larger views.
The Hadrian head necklace to the above right was the Judge's Choice award at Liz Holm's Enchantment Stables 5th Annual Pour Horse and Lucas Studio Photo Show, held in 2003. There were 831 entries in the class!
The Worth the Wait head above right is believed to be a prize from one of Liz Holms' photo shows.
Joanie made the Brownie head pendants above as a fundraiser for the Million Dollar Challenge, a bicycle race that benefits athletes with disabilities. For every $10 a person donated to the Million Dollar Challenge, they would get one chance to win a Brownie head necklace; for every $100 they donated, Joanie would give them a necklace. Joanie made as many pendants as donations were made. Unlike the trophies and pendants above these were not made from the heads of broken pieces, but were made as pendants deliberately.
Photos by Joanie Berkwitz except for the Hadrian head necklace, by L. Dean, the Nomad head trophy, which is by E. LaRose, and the photos of the bisque Suspiro and Knut heads and the Worth the Wait trophy head, which are by C. Dils. Thanks ladies!!
